She was taught dance by her parents, and had ballet lessons at the Santa Monica Playhouse when she was a little girl. In the year 1996, she was offered a role as a guest on the TV drama Party of Five. As she was admitted to New York University by Kate Hudson, her goal was to pursue a job in showbusiness and not earn the degree. After acting in minor films in the past, she was offered a part that would later become the focus of her career. She was chosen to play Penny Lane in the comedy-drama film Almost Famous. The film didn't do very well at the box office, but it received positive review from critics. It established Kate as an actor within the American film industry.
